The Most Common Questions I Get Asked Before a Boudoir Photoshoot
Curious about embarking on a boudoir photo-shoot but feeling a bit apprehensive or unsure? Don't worry; you're not alone! As a seasoned boudoir photographer, I often get asked the same range of questions from clients who are gearing up for their intimate photography session or people just curious about my line of work. So read on to read my responses to some of the most common questions i get asked:
1. What Exactly is a Boudoir Shoot?
You might have heard the term before, but what does it really entail? A boudoir shoot is a photo session where you get to express your beauty, confidence, and sensuality through tasteful and elegant images. You can call it a makeover shoot, pin up, fine art or even a lifestyle shoot if it makes you feel more comfortable; but Boudoir is just a capsule term it does not necessarily need to mean lingerie or nude. 'Boudoir' literally just means Private room. Â It's an empowering experience where you can celebrate your body but in a more private and intimate setting.
2. Do I Need to Have Modeling Experience?
Absolutely not! One of the most beautiful aspects of boudoir photography is that it's for everyone. You don't need any prior modeling experience or a specific body type to shine in front of the camera. As a professional boudoir photographer, my job is to guide you throughout the shoot, help you with poses, and highlight your best features, making you feel like a true model.
3. What Should I Wear for the Shoot?
The thought of choosing the right outfits for your boudoir session can be overwhelming, but it's also one of the most exciting parts! When selecting your wardrobe, consider pieces that make you feel confident and beautiful. From elegant lingerie sets to cozy sweaters or even your partner's shirt, the key is to wear items that reflect your personality and make you feel comfortable. Your photographer should help you with outfits suggestions, but just in case check out some ideas here https://www.phoenixboudoir.co.uk/what-to-bring but most importantly 'Wear Your Version of Sexy!'
4. How Can I Prepare for the Shoot?
Don't over think it! Make sure to get a good night's sleep, stay hydrated, and pamper yourself the day before the shoot. As long as you bring along 3/4 different outfits, any props, accessories, or sentimental items that you'd like to incorporate into the photo-shoot you are all set. Relax and trust the process – it's all about capturing your natural beauty!
5. Will My Photos be Kept Private?
Privacy and confidentiality are top priorities during a boudoir photo-shoot. Your photographer should respect your boundaries and ensure that your images are kept secure and only shared with your consent. You should have the final say on who gets to see your photos and which ones you are happy to share. As you may be happy to share that cute jumper picture but not your daring nude; so be specific.
6. How Can I Overcome Nervousness or Insecurities?
Feeling nervous before a boudoir shoot is completely normal, but remember that this experience is all about embracing your uniqueness and celebrating yourself. In my experience nerves do normally disappear after the first few minutes as you are too busy concentrating on posing, trust me! But If you are feeling a little insecure I would suggest on the run up to your shoot to focus on positive affirmations, pick outfits that make you feel good and make sure you have discussed any insecurities with your photographer; i know i like to be aware of these so i can make you feel as comfortable as possible e.g. not push certain poses if its going to make you more self conscious. Trust your photographer's expertise, and most importantly, have fun! Boudoir photography is a journey of self-love and empowerment, and the end result is always worth it.
7. What if I don’t want to be topless/ naked?
Then you absolutely do not have to be. It is very important that you feel 100% comfortable throughout the sitting, if you don’t then it will show in your photographs. Your photographer should discuss your comfort levels and boundaries with you in advance of your shoot. This question is always on my Pre-shoot agenda. Most people know in advance how much flesh they are comfortable showing, but i always ask what you would like in a ideal world.
For example in your dream scenario you might love a nude photo but you might not think you'll ever be brave enough to do it. Express your 'ideal' outcome in advance with your photographer so we can monitor your comfortable levels on the day. A seasoned photographer will usually be able to tell and double check with you if you would like to push yourself a little further? you may well decide on the day that you are feeling relaxed and confident enough to go a little bit further than you were expecting; but if you don't and have your whole shoot in your favorite dress then that’s fine too. The point of a Boudoir photo-shoot is for you to feel at your most sexy so if your feel most sexy in a baggy jumper then that’s great.
8. Can you hide my cellulite, tattoos, scars etc?
Of course I can; however this can sometimes be very personal to the individual and part of who you are. These 'scars' often tell a story, your story and the point of these photos is to celebrate who you are and your uniqueness, we don’t want to remove anything that will take that away.
In a world increasing full of filters and AI i strongly believe that to have some authenticity and imperfectly beautiful has never been more important. However you can ask me to remove anything you like and I’ll make sure that’s done for you, but only after your seen your finished photos and you are still 'bothered' by it. In my experience 98% of people no longer notice what was bothering them.
Ready to embark on your boudoir journey? I would love to tell your story.
